Growing and Nurturing Your Business Grove

Like what's symbolized by the Business Wisdom tree logo, a business owner works to grow a strong, solid and sustainable business.

Growing your company is like growing a grove of trees in the following three ways:

First, trees must effectively grow outward, with limbs and branches reaching for the sky and capturing air and sunlight. If well nourished, they bear ripe fruit. This is just like a business needs to reach out for, capture, and well serve quality customers through its productive Business Development and Customer Service efforts. If those customers are then well engaged and cared for, the company bears fruit for its owners, employees, and community.
Second, trees must grow strong roots, firmly anchoring themselves against environmental forces, and also gaining sustenance from the ground. This is just like a business needing a solid Company Management foundation (job structures, work processes, information systems, and resource availability) on which to build. With that it can better sustain the stormy weather of an unpredictable economy.

Third, a grove of trees needs good caretakers who prune the branches, and who treat the leaves, ground and fruit carefully. Those caretakers also need to ensure sufficient water and fertilization into the ground that will feed its growth. This is just like a business needing effective Organization Leadership and Learning, for owners and managers to make and execute sound decisions about how to grow outward into the marketplace, to acquire suitable resources, and to develop an effective and efficient internal infrastructure. Like with trees, improper caretaking will cause a business to grow unwieldy, or expire from lack of a proper support or sustenance.

Again, like in the Business Wisdom logo, the notion of having many trees in your "business grove" symbolizes the need for companies, as they grow, to branch out into new and synergistic business opportunities, and leveraging a number of product/market arenas. This also requires the continual strengthening of the infrastructure base that works to hold up the whole organization. Handling greater organizational growth and complexity, as well as dealing with times of bad economic weather, can make it more challenging and demanding for company caretakers. Business leaders also need to learn to sustain themselves well, if they hope to sustain their business grove.

Thus, growing your business is just like growing a grove of trees. So, how well is your grove growing?
